2010 Winter Olympics

The opening ceremonies for the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver begin tomorrow, Friday, February 12, 2010. The ice skating competitions, both individual and couples, have to be my favorite. Takes me back to when Peggy Fleming was America’s sweetheart. And of course the skiing events are always big on my list for excitement. And who can forget the snowboarding and luge events? Wonder what thrills we will see this time?
So you know where I will be…watching and rooting for America to bring home the Gold!!
Good Luck and Godspeed to all of the athletes who are competing. Remember, you are already champions just for making it this far.

How to Prepare For Your First 300 Game in Bowling

Would you like to know a very simple technique any bowler can use that can help you prepare for your first 300 game? Did you notice I wrote first 300 game? What you are going to learn is something that will help you in league play as well as in tournament play. You are going to learn how to create your own customized "Preshot Success Routine".

If you ever watch professional athletes, they have discovered a success routine that has worked very well for them and has brought them to the professional ranks. The next time you watch your favorite bowlers on Tour, pay close attention to their Preshot Success Routine. I'm not asking you to copy exactly what they are doing, but to just observe how consistent they are when they use their routine.

Right now I want you to imagine what your present preshot routine is and how well it is working for you. Let's start with when you are walking up to the approach and picking up your ball. Do you use a towel? Do you put your hand over the blower to remove any sweat? How do you hold onto the ball once you step up onto the approach? Where are your feet positioned? What are you focusing on just before you take your first step?

There are more variables to your routine but at least you have a good idea where to start. Make sure you create your own personal Preshot Success Routine you feel comfortable with and you can use each time no matter if its for a strike or spare. Consistency is the secret to your Preshot Success Routine. You must commit to it no matter how you are feeling.

When I worked with Collegiate Bowlers, we would go into detail what their routine looked like because we were building a solid foundation that was reliable and consistent. Why is it so important to have a Preshot Success Routine? You need this so you don't have to think about it when you step up to the approach. Your routine must become a habit so you can really focus on your target. Think about when you are driving a car now compared to when you first began learning how to drive. So many things you do now when you drive are just automatic. This is what we are striving for - an automatic routine. A Preshot Success Routine you really don't have to think about.

Remember this is your own Preshot Success Routine, not anyone else's. Create one that fits you and one that you feel comfortable with using on every shot. Did you know it takes 21 consecutive days to form a new habit? You need to commit to make your Preshot Success Routine a habit. Once you do, then you are on your way to your first of several 300 games. When it comes down to the last three frames, your routine is what can bring you through your first perfect game.

Confused About Bowling Terms? Learn "Must-Know" Bowling Terminology!

Ever wondered what comes after a turkey? Or what a brooklyn is? And where do bedposts come in? If you're confused about all the bowling terminology and want to know what on earth they're talking about down at the bowling alley, worry no more. Below is a list of some common tenpin bowling terms you'll hear around.

Back-up ball - For a right-handed bowler, a back-up ball is one which curves left to right instead of right to left. For left-hand bowlers it is the opposite.

6 bagger - A 6 bagger is 6 strikes in a row. The word bagger can be preceded by any number from three to eleven. This is oneof the more frquently used bowling terms.

Bedposts (or goalposts) - Used to describe the 7 - 10 split. Very difficult to convert into a spare.

Big Four - A split which leaves bowling pins 4-6-7-10 standing. Again notoriously difficult to convert.

Brooklyn - When a bowler hits the pocket opposite to that expected of a right or left handed player, e.g. When a right-handed bowler bowls a bowling ball which hits the left pocket (1 & 2 pins) instead of the normal (1 & 3 pins)

Conversion - Bowling terminology to describe a spare. For example, a 7-10 conversion.

Count - The number of pins that are knocked over which are added to the strike or spare from the previous frame.

Double - A bowling term for two strikes in a row.

Field Goal - A miss which goes throw two pins set wide apart.

Hambone (also clover, 4 bagger) - A word used for four consecutive strikes.

Head-pin - The first pin.

Heavy shot - A shot which hits too much of the front pin and causes them to split.

Hook - Hooking the bowling ball makes it travel straight and curve in towards the pins as it approaches them.

Light shot - Light shots hit the bowling pins closer to the 3 pin than the 1 pin for right-handed bowlers. The same applies to the 1 and 2 pins for left-handed bowlers.

Lofting - Releasing the bowling ball too high above the lane.

Pocket - The ideal area of impact in order to score a strike. This is between the 1 and 3 pins for right-handed bowlers and the 1 and 2 bowling pins for lefties.

Spare - Where all the pins are knocked down in two attempts.

Strike - Where all the pins are knocked over in the first attempt.

Strike-out - When a bowler gets three consecutive strikes in the last frame.

Turkey - A bowling term used to describe three strikes in a row
